For a long time, building a global technology company seemed to come with an unofficial requirement: leave.
Move closer to capital. Closer to customers. Closer to one of the world’s established technology hubs.
But software has changed the geography of ambition.
Today, a product can be built in Podgorica and used thousands of kilometres away. A team can operate across borders from day one. Customers may never know — or need to know — where the first line of code was written.
So the more interesting question is no longer whether Montenegro is too small to build globally. It is what being small changes about the way companies have to build.
Small market. Global thinking.
A domestic market of limited size creates an obvious constraint, but it can also create an unusual mindset: international expansion cannot remain a distant ambition.
For many technology companies from smaller ecosystems, thinking beyond the local market has to happen early. Products need to travel. Teams need international networks. Founders need to understand customers they may never meet in their home country.
Montenegro already offers examples of companies and founders working this way — building technology from the region while serving international users, clients and markets.
But location has not become irrelevant. Access to talent, investment, experienced mentors and stronger startup networks still matters. Building globally from a smaller ecosystem can mean creating connections deliberately rather than inheriting them from the city around you.
Maybe geography is becoming an advantage of a different kind
The next generation of global companies does not necessarily need to copy Silicon Valley to compete with it.
Smaller ecosystems can offer tighter communities, faster connections and founders accustomed to looking outward from the beginning.
The opportunity is not to pretend geography no longer matters. It is to ask how geography can be used differently.
Because a company can start in Montenegro without Montenegro being the limit of its ambition.
At IT SPOT 2026, founders, technology leaders and people building across international markets will meet in Podgorica to continue exactly that conversation.
